PS - don't forget I do a podcast with my mate, TV's Tom Binns. That's a comedy podcast, because he's a comedian. My role is to add comments "like a wise old owl".

Check out this episode!

Great show Nick, you always present a range of fascinating and sometimes challenging experiences to be explored, for that i am thankful.

Regarding TM or Transcendental Meditation - you are dead on with the Alan Watts clip - this is the basic principle - a mantra is chanted during meditation - in TM it is chanted silently - it is basically a form of self hypnosis -

But you see it gets cultish -

The method was made popular in the 1960's by an Indian yogi bloke called Maharishi, all the counter culture celebs of the decade, the Beatles and the Beach Boys etc knocked about with him-

But by all accounts this bloke was a bit of a fraudster - like all good religions he took massive donations - his estate was worth 600 million by the time he died

- Nowadays all the celebs are into Maharishi's TM movement - your mate Russell Brand bangs on about it -

Clint Eastwood, Oprah, loads of them - they love it - most of all movie director David Lynch - he's like the Tom Cruise Scientology guy for TM - before the 'guru' died he paid Maharishi one million dollars to participate in a four-week "Millionaire's Enlightenment Course' - he now has his own foundation - tied into the official TM organization -

I was fascinated by all this, their base is here in Los Angeles so I thought i'd give them a call - all I can say is they operate very strangely -

I called and left a message I had 6 return calls from 4 different people, they sounded like drones somehow, but persistent - I was told the price of the classes repeatedly at every communication - the organization charges thousands of dollars for a couple of meditation classes, they insist that your 'mantra' or special meditation word can only be given to you by a quailed teacher - - qualified by who? - by them only! They also tell you to keep your mantra secret and if you tell someone it loses it power - its nonsense - the whole thing was really dodgy so i left it alone.

I'm not sure whats going on here - if you could ever talk to any former TMers i'd be fascinated to know - the inside story - the documentary 'David Wants To Fly' is interesting if you can find it -

I do think there is something in the practice though, the repetitive chant of a word under meditation - I can even equate it to the TED talk of Dr Jill Bolte Taylor (great link btw) - the left side of the brain is the language processor so if it is kept busy (by the reputation of the mantra) - we can access the right side more freely and hence 'transcend' - I have experienced this - a submerging of realities - I think theres something in it -

Save yourself a couple of grand and try it out - there are some of the TM 'mantra's' posted online -

Thanks mate!

Hi Nick

I like the phone in idea. The problem though is what to talk about, i feel like I have a million things going on inside my head, but it reminds me of this thing I've been thinking about recently... The I newspaper had their christmas charity auction and one of the lots was to write the front page, unfortunately in the small print it wasn't to go in the real paper, it was just something to put on your wall, but if it could go in the paper and therefore be in every newsagents, supermarket and garage across the country what story would you run with? In other words, if you had just one opportunity to say something to the unenlightened masses what would it be?

Cheers, Dave

Howdy Mr M,

That was a particularly powerful interview with Ian MacFadyen, the most chilling thing I've heard in a long time was the comment from the mother of his school friend that the abuse he suffered "a small price to pay for a good education".

I'd like to think that this was an example of really dark and poorly judged humour but I don't think this is the case. For the mother of a child who could easily have suffered the same abuse to shrug this off so easily without any empathy or sympathy is astonishing and thinking about this I actually find myself pitying these people who have been bred to accept that such systematic abuse is the cost of a privileged lifestyle.

Was reminded of David Icke's revisions of his alien shapeshifting reptoids theory to fit the overpowering of the neocortex by the reptilian brain. It seems to fit this strata of society very well is it possible that a sub-species of humanity has been evolving or intentionally bred to be servile drones to a power system at the cost of what we'd call 'humanity'?

Or is it just extra-dimensional twats mucking about with us?

Elsewhere in the C.O.N.cast you mentioned sticking a meditation section in - what about using this as an experiment in collectively influencing 'objective reality'. It's all been done before, (Grant Morrison with the Invisibles springs straight to mind) but I dunno if through the power of podcast. You've got quite an eclectic bunch of folk listening It'd be interesting to see what even a couple of dozen people focussing their intent on a certain thing at a certain time could do.

Keep fighting the good fight.

All hail Discordia!
